Sharon Cottrill, a volunteer with the West Virginia chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation, digs a hole for a chesnut tree sapling Saturday morning along a hillside at the Bechtel Family Summit near Glen Jean. The American Chestnut tree was almost completely wiped out by a blight imported from Asia from early 1900 to 1950, and the more than 400 saplings planted at the Summit Saturday are potentially resistant to it. The effort is part of a breeding program to restore the tree to the eastern forests of America.
