Youngters (from left) Isaiah Adkins, 12, Myles Cook, 3, and Isaiah's brother Elijah, 11, wait with enthusiasm to open their presents as the Adkins' mother Brenda Crider, far right, looks on Sunday afternoon at the Pine Haven Center. A handful of lucky children at the center received Christmas presents Sunday from the Alfred A. Torres Memorial Toy Fund, named after a Beckley native and former Marine who passed away in 2013 and had a special place in his heart for the area's youth. His wife Ann started the fund in his honor, aiming to provide Christmas presents for any child that otherwise wouldn't have any, and Flat Top Arms owners Ron Diana Wood chipped in to help provide the group of kids a very merry Christmas.
