Beckley artist Miles Cushman, seated, shares some laughs with friend C.R. Allen (kneeling) as attendees browse his work on the wall behind him during a reception for Cushman's work at the Beckley Art Center's Cynthia Bickey Gallery Thursday evening. Art has played a major role in helping the now 38-year-old Cushman recover from a 1999 car accident that left him with a traumatic brain injury. The former Virginia Tech student has amassed volumes and volumes of work over the years during his recovery process, and Thursday's reception provided him the opportunity to share it with the community as he signed autographs, gave away some free work and met with fellow artists and community members.
