A unique funeral procession featuring a riderless horse tribute (seen at far right) takes place through downtown Mullens Saturday morning. It was in memory of 64-year-old Delmer Shrewsbury, who passed away November 24th after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a lifelong Mullens resident, loved horses and was well-known throughout town as a proud cowboy, which is part of the reason for the tribute. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, serving two tours in Korea over a six-year career. Believed to originate back to the days of Ghengis Khan, the riderless horse tribute has generally served as a military tribute. The boots in the riderless horse's stirrups are turned backwards, symbolizing a leader's last look back at his troops. It was proper fit for Shrewsbury as horseman too, as a pair of his reversed boots and one of his old hats symbolized a last look back at his immediate family, which rides behind him at left.
